WHAT GROWING UP IN INDIA TAUGHT ME ABOUT CREATING EVENTS WITH INTENTION

I grew up in Mumbai, India, where celebrations aren't just events—they're woven into the fabric of family life.

Ceremonies often lasted for days, not hours. Festivals meant the entire neighborhood gathering. Every milestone was marked with intention, color, and warmth that made you feel truly welcomed.

In Indian culture, hospitality isn't just being polite. It's an art form. It's about making someone feel so comfortable they forget to check their phone. That's the feeling I chase as an Atlanta event planner.

When I moved to Atlanta and started my career in interior architecture, I discovered the principles that make a home feel alive are the same ones that make a celebration worth remembering.

A room needs flow, focal points, and moments that surprise you. So does a great party.

After seven years of designing spaces, I launched The Velvet Finch in 2011. That wasn't abandoning design, it was expanding my idea of it. In addition to creating spaces people live in, I get to create experiences people talk about for months, years… or the rest of their lives!

the velvet finch philosophy

AN EVENT ISN'T JUST DÉCOR, FOOD, AND ENTERTAINMENT EXISTING SEPARATELY. IT'S A COMPLETE SENSORY EXPERIENCE.

The way the lighting shifts from cocktail hour to dinner. The moment a grandmother tears up at a detail you added specifically for her. The surprise element that makes the guest of honor gasp.

I named my company The Velvet Finch because finches are incredibly social birds—they thrive in community and create something beautiful through connection. That's what great events do.

My favorite part? The unexpected details. They don't always cost extra, but they require forethought. Sometimes it's a little surprise I add to delight the client—a nod to something mentioned in passing. Months later, clients tell me, "People are STILL talking about that one detail!"

That's when I know we've created something that matters.

Luxury events don’t have to feel pretentious

Over 15 years as a luxury event planner in Atlanta, I've had some incredible opportunities. Singer Monica has trusted my team with multiple family milestones and holiday parties. I've planned celebrations for Snoopdogg, Teyana Taylor, Sara Blakely from Spanx, and NBA and NFL players. Brands like Spanx, Kate Aspen, and Beechnut Foods have commissioned me for styled events and content. I've worked with nonprofits like the Be Human Foundation and Children's Hospital of Atlanta.

I also create corporate experiences and private events that require discretion, as well as impeccable execution.

What energizes me most is creating moments that matter—whether it's an executive celebrating a company milestone, a mother planning her daughter's Sweet 16, or far-flung siblings honoring their parents' 50th anniversary. These are the events where I see the real impact: people connecting, traditions being honored in fresh ways, new memories being made.

But the real validation comes later, when clients send me notes that guests are “still talking about how they felt at my party.”

Where I find inspiration

As a child in Mumbai, I was obsessed with watching our house being renovated. I'd come home from school and just observe the team for hours, mesmerized by how raw materials could become something beautiful. My parents assumed it was a phase. Turns out, I earned an interior design degree, graduating third in my class!

Today I'm still a designer at heart, drawing upon my early experiences while living in the Atlanta suburbs with my husband and two kids. I'm still that person who enjoys watching and creating space transformations.  When I'm not planning your celebration, I'm probably mid-home-décor-project, because I genuinely can't help myself. I also serve on the board of Discover Dunwoody, coordinating cultural events that strengthen our community.

My treasured moments? Big reveals where the clients don't know the surprise themselves, and I get to witness their emotions in real time. Being part of those once-in-a-lifetime reactions never gets old.

Experience has taught me:

  • Planning events for award-winning musicians and NBA and NFL players who are household names taught me that everyone—celebrity or not—just wants their celebration to feel personal and stress-free.

  • For adult celebrations, every project is custom-executed with genuine care

  • I focus on entertainment first when planning kids parties, because while they appreciate beautiful décor, what they really remember is the FUN.

I bring the same care to your celebration that I bring to my own family gatherings: attention to what actually matters, respect for tradition, and a true desire to create something meaningful. Beyond Instagram-pretty (though it will be that), The Velvet Finch creates events where you and your guests look around the room and feel grateful for everyone there.

AN INVITATION
FOR YOU

Before we dive into timelines and vendor lists, we want to earn your trust. I want you to feel completely taken care of—to know my team and I will go above and beyond to bring your vision to life.

Experience comes with time, but genuine care comes straight from the heart. At the Velvet Finch we care about your celebration, your guests, and creating something you'll be proud of. We'll read between the lines as you describe your vision. We'll gently steer you away from ideas that won't work logistically. We'll handle the details that keep you up at night.

If you're looking for an Atlanta party planner who makes you feel like you've found "the one"—a feeling that makes you inhale deeply and smile—I'd love to talk.
